People Like Us is an Australian collective that is dedicated to the admirable cause of turning t-shirts into an art-form and providing their artists with as much exposure as possible. All of their shirts are very limited, hand numbered, and feature brilliant designs printed on the finest cotton. We love their new White Series shirts, especially the “Farewell To My Concubine” shirt by Kenneth King. King is an incredible illustrator from Sydney that hand draws all of his work with exceptional attention to detail. According to King, this design was inspired by the beauty and elegantly choreographed fight scenes in Chinese Martial arts films. King successfully translates that theme in this image with exquisite pen-work that renders the figures in a graceful dance, floating on the surface of the white shirt. The ink splatters bring a sense of gravity to the overall piece and even they look like they were carried out with the deliberateness of a master’s hand. There is so much detail here that we don’t think any digital reproduction can do it justice. You’ll have to get one of these amazing shirts for yourself at the People Like Us site to really appreciate it.
